Last week, the ceremonial court at the FCT High Court in Abuja was abuzz with activity as 52 magistrates and judicial officers came together for an important capacity building programme. The focus? Enhancing compliance with the Practice Direction and Guidelines on Remand Proceedings.
A Day of Learning and Engagement:
The event kicked off at 9:00 AM, with participants streaming into the venue, eagerly signing in at the reception. By 9:30 AM, the formal proceedings began with an opening prayer, followed by a rendition of the national anthem that set a solemn tone for the day.

The high table, adorned with notable guests, was introduced promptly at 9:35 AM, setting the stage for the day’s sessions.
Key Sessions:
Session 1: At 10:00 AM, the first session began with HW Folashade M. Oyekan, DCR Litigation, delivering a comprehensive overview of the Practice Direction on Remand Proceedings. Her insights provided a solid foundation for the discussions that followed.
Session 2: The focus then shifted to a critical aspect of judicial practice: "Exercise of Discretion in Considering Hearings Remand Application and Key Components of a Remand Order." Hon. Justice Celestine Odo led this 30-minute session, offering valuable perspectives on this pivotal topic.

Interactive Engagement:
The event also featured an interactive Q&A session from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM, where attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and share their thoughts. This was followed by a much-needed tea break and group sessions that allowed for further discussion and networking.
After the tea break, the lecture resumed and continued until a little after 3 PM, at which point the event came to a close.
